Anderson was born in Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky.1 He was the son of Reuben Anderson and Sarah Runyan.1 He went off to Texas in about 1839, and as of 1841 his family in Frankfort had heard nothing more from him.2 Charles S. Anderson was in military service in Captain William H Moore's Company C of the forces of the Republic of Texas in the Comanche War on 24 October 1839 in Opossum Creek, Williamson County, Texas. On this particular date his company was involved along with Captain Thomas Howard's Company B in a skirmish with a group of Comanches.3 He was in military service enlisted as protection for the town of Austin on 11 March 1842 in Austin, Travis County, Texas.4
